Christian mentioned the Shriners in his post. It reminds me that in these very hard economic times, the Shriners likely will have to close several of their hospitals.
So, as the need grows, the help available shrinks.
Here in Asheville, we have Project Access, which coordinates the charity care that doctors and hospitals give so that people can see specialists if they need them.
But I hear Project Access is becoming overwhelmed because the need is growing so fast.
Call me a socialist, but I think government will have to be involved, as it is in every other industrialized nation in the world — as it already is here in the United States in such successful programs as Medicare.
The kindness of people is a wonderful and precious thing. But we all pay taxes that have gone to bail out the ultra-rich. It’s time the kind and wonderful people who are so willing to help be given something back — like access to health care without having to beg for it.
