I’m speaking at another rally tomorrow, telling Mike’s story. I miss him more every time I tell it, but it makes people aware that something needs to be done.
I’m so tired of listening to the crap of politics. President Obama’s press conference tonight was almost silly with the questions from the media about whether it would be the Republicans’ fault if reform doesn’t pass, or whether he could promise this, that or the other thing.
The problem is complex, and it’s made even more so by all the misinformation out there on both sides.
The plan as it is now would take several years to cover almost everybody. It would not be a socialist plan. It would not take away patients’ choice. It would HAVE to be deficit neutral by law. It would rein in the abuses by the insurance industry, which is raking in record profits as people lose coverage. It would regulate insurance and improve communication between doctors, who often order the same expensive tests on patients because they don’t know what the patient’s other doctors have done. It would improve chronic illness care, which is a great money-saver.
Meanwhile, the president was asked about his friend, the Harvard professor who was arrested for breaking into his own home. All of a sudden, that’s the story.
The media has the attention span of a gnat. It infuriates me, and I’m a member of the media.
Can we focus for a little while?
The plan as it exists is not perfect, but it is a start, and we need to start.
