I listened to the president’s address tonight, and it was a good speech with a decent plan.
It won’t cover every American, but it will clean up much of the health care mess in the country today.
A marketplace exchange — illegal in many states — would help a lot of Americans afford care. Making it illegal to deny care based on re-existing conditions or cancel a policy because you get sick is a great start at regulating the huge insurance industry, which until now has been largely unregulated.
Yes, it will send millions of new customers to the insurance companies, but it will regulate them.
I was impressed.
I also was appalled when Rep. Joe Wilson, Republican of South Carolina, shouted, “You lie!” when the president said his plan doesn’t cover people who are in this country illegally.
I can’t believe the lack of respect. I have watched many, many presidential addresses and I have never seen anything like it.
In Washington on Sunday, we will send the message that we want every American to have access to quality health care.
The president’s plan takes four years to set up the marketplace — too long for the tens of thousands of Americans who die every year because they can’t get care.
But it’s an acceptable plan — for a start.
