We’re almost there

I seriously doubt the Senate will vote by March 18, but I think we’re closing in on a viable bill.

I don’t think the bill goes far enough. As Big Eddie said on Wednesday, this is a step in the right direction and we have to take it and then begin the fight for more reform.

“Pass the damn bill!” he said.

Heather Mroz talked about being $480,000 in debt because United canceled her policy while she was in the hospital with a difficult pregnancy, reting the save the lives of her twins, and then didn’t inform her for two months, Ed chased her down in the hall and asked her to join us on his show that night.

Heather won’t ever be able to pay back that money. She doesn’t even have a job right now and her marriage has broken up. Her babies have Medicaid, but it won’t pay for a helmet to correct the shape of her son’s head because it’s “cosmetic.”

We need to fix this. The bill, with the fixes that Harry Reid says will happen with reconciliation, is a start.

Let’s pass it and then start working on the rest.

Patient Pals & Family Friends

Life o' Mike has a new peer support program for people newly diagnosed with chronic or serious illness or with a new disability and their caregivers. Patient Pals are people who have experience with various illnesses and disabilities, who can help someone newly diagnosed or with a new disability work through the fear, frustration, confusion and grief often experienced in the first few months. Family Friends are there to help caregivers and other family members grow into their new role. People with new illness or disability fare better when they have a role model -- someone who can help them negotiate their new path in life. We need volunteers, who are asked to donate a minimum of one hour a week. Training is free and includes information on active listening, ways to help and when to know more help is needed. And of course, we need funding. To learn more, call Leslie Boyd at 828-243-6712 or e-mail lifeomike@gmail.com.
