I hate to think of the battle for health care in America as a competition, but WE WON!!
Yes, the GOP will try to overturn the Affordable Care Act, but it has been deemed Constitutional, and that is a huge victory.
I was just about to head to Charlotte for an early afternoon press conference when the news finally broke that the US Supreme Court had upheld almost the entire law — including the individual mandate.
I didn’t know whether to jump for joy or cry, so I did both.
The victory is bittersweet for me. If this had happened a few years earlier, Mike might still be here.
I have to admit I felt his presence this morning as I read the news that the law had been upheld. He wanted me to work for something positive, and I think this law is very positive.
It only will cover 30 million of the 50 million uninsured in America, but insurance companies no longer will be able to deny coverage to people like my son. That is a huge victory.
So, in the morning, I will go back to work to fight for care for the other 20 million, and for a public option that will give insurance companies real competition.
But for tonight, I think I’ll crack open a bottle of champagne and toast President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and all the people who fought for this victory.
