Patient Pals & Family Friends

Life o' Mike has a new peer support program for people newly diagnosed with chronic or serious illness or with a new disability and their caregivers.
Patient Pals are people who have experience with various illnesses and disabilities, who can help someone newly diagnosed or with a new disability work through the fear, frustration, confusion and grief often experienced in the first few months.
Family Friends are there to help caregivers and other family members grow into their new role.
People with new illness or disability fare better when they have a role model -- someone who can help them negotiate their new path in life.
We need volunteers, who are asked to donate a minimum of one hour a week. Training is free and includes information on active listening, ways to help and when to know more help is needed.
And of course, we need funding.
To learn more, call Leslie Boyd at 828-243-6712 or e-mail lifeomike@gmail.com.

OK…actually it was a pretty beat-up Harley that I bought from a coke-head in Stony Point, AND…the jury may still be out concerning how positive my influence on Mike was, BUT…..I do want to say that that was a great day for me; there is no question about that. The fact that Mike wanted me to ride him to his graduation was a real source of pride for me. That was such an important day in his life, and the fact that he wanted me to figure so prominently in that day was a real honor.
I don’t even know where to start…he was a beautiful, crazy, troubled, confused, sensitive, brilliant, brave guy.
The angels must have their hands full…but they’re having fun!!
You were a hell of a good influence on him. He so looked up to you, and your influence lives on in Mike’s nephew, Trey, who’s starting guitar lessons on Mike’s old guitar. I only wish he could have you as a teacher and mentor. Not many other adults saw Mike’s musical and wiseass potential the way you did. I’ll always be grateful for all you did for him when he was still a misguided, addled kid. I believe your influence had a lot to do with the man he became.
